Boost for blockchain in China as Xinhua to issue photos as NFTs

SHANGHAI (Reuters) -The official Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday it will issue a digital media photo collection via non-fungible tokens (NFTs), a first for China and a boost for the blockchain technology that underpins them and that Beijing has previously criticised. NFTs, which are digitised ownership certificates, have gained in popularity globally this year, featuring as everything from an autographed tweet to paintings. But China's relationship with the technology behind them, which also backs cryptocurrencies, is a complex one. The issuance by the state news agency would indicate official support for NFTs, but party mouthpiece People's Daily last month criticised them as a possible fraud. Xinhua said in an official notice that it planned to issue the 11 photos, all taken by journalists during 2021, free of charge online at 8 p.m. ... Read More on Datafloq

Exclusive-Brazil central bank puts brakes on tougher rules for fintechs, sources say

By Marcela Ayres and Aluisio Alves BRASILIA/SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil's central bank has put the brakes on tougher regulations for the burgeoning fintech industry, withdrawing a draft proposal that had been set to be voted on last month by the government's top financial policy-making body, four sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. On Nov. 18, the central bank proposed that the regulations be discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the National Monetary Council (CMN) but the new rules - which look to level the playing field between fintechs and traditional banks - were never voted on, the sources say. The central bank declined to comment. It is unclear why the central bank chose to delay the passing of the regulatory changes but it has left a multi-billion-dollar sector ... Read More on Datafloq

By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S auto safety regulators said Wednesday they have opened a formal safety investigation into 580,000 Tesla vehicles sold since 2017 over the automaker's decision to allow games to be played on the front center touchscreen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said its preliminary evaluation covers various 2017-2022 model year Tesla Model 3, S, X, and Y vehicles. This functionality, referred to as “Passenger Play,” "may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash," the agency said. NHTSA said it has "confirmed that this capability has been available since December 2020 in Tesla 'Passenger Play'-equipped vehicles." Before then, the game feature "was enabled only when the vehicle was in Park." Tesla did not immediately comment. NHTSA said it "will evaluate ... Read More on Datafloq

Exclusive-Turkey's cryptocurrency trades top 1 million a day amid lira woes

By Marc Jones and Tom Wilson LONDON (Reuters) - The number of cryptocurrency trades in Turkey has surged back above one million per day as the country's currency has plunged to a series of record lows, data shared with Reuters showed. Worries about Turkey's economic policy have seen the lira slump nearly 40% since September, driving Turks to look for places to park their savings to avoid the effects of soaring inflation. The one million-a-day threshold - cleared according to data from blockchain analysis firms Chainalysis and Kaiko - was first surpassed earlier in the year when the sudden replacement of the country's central bank chief in March triggered the lira's first major slump of 2021. But the number of trades had dropped back below 500,000, before the ... Read More on Datafloq

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) said on Tuesday the 2021-22 Tesla Model Y received its Top Safety Pick+ designation. Following a conversion to a camera-only system, IIHS said the mid-size SUV's standard front crash-prevention system earned superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. The standard front crash-prevention system on 2021-22 Tesla Model 3 vehicles built after April also earned a superior rating in both crash avoidance tests, following a software update, IIHS said. To qualify for the awards, vehicles must earn good ratings in six crashworthiness tests, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. They must also be available with a front crash-prevention system that earns high ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian ... Read More on Datafloq

The technology industry has long been criticized for overlooking Black and Latino founders, and the improvement was greeted with some caution. Floyd's death sparked a national outcry about the treatment of people of color in many areas, but often without clear results. "The numbers are broken, right? Blockchain as a Solution for Healthcare Industry in the Covid-19 Era

In order to understand the interest of blockchain technology in the healthcare sector, it is important to understand the characteristics that differentiate it from current tools for sharing and managing data. First of all, blockchain is a decentralised technology. Unlike traditional tools which are centrally managed by a single intermediary, the blockchain is a database distributed among all the nodes of the network. Thus, each minor has a copy of the register. This technology thus lends itself to the sharing of information between several stakeholders such as hospitals, research centres or pharmaceutical laboratories. The blockchain also makes it possible to trace the origin and fate of each of the data recorded. Unlike a centralised system in which an administrator controls this information, in a blockchain only the owner can save it and transfer it to other stakeholders. In addition, although the ledger created by the blockchain is made available to all members of the network, the d

Britain depicts China and Russia as strategic rivals whose rush for control of some major technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and microprocessor design could threaten both Western security and a relatively free internet. "China and Russia continue to advocate for greater national sovereignty over cyberspace as the answer to security challenges," according to Britain's new National Cyber Strategy to be published on Wednesday. "Debates over the rules governing cyberspace will increasingly become a site of systemic competition between great powers, with a clash of values," Britain said. ... Read More on Datafloq

The app, which says it does not bow to "government censorship", has become increasingly popular with activists and protesters, especially as platforms like Facebook become more responsive to government pressure to crack down on those spreading lies, threats or conspiracy theories.
