Northvolt battery plant sparks into life, a first for Europe

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Sweden's Northvolt said on Wednesday its new gigafactory in northern Sweden has assembled its first battery cell, making it the first European company to design and manufacture a battery on the continent.
The cell is of a prismatic cell format - a variety of thinner and lighter battery - and came off the assembly line on Tuesday.
Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson had told Reuters that the new factory would produce a battery this year "even if it means the first battery is made on New Year's Eve".
"What we did yesterday was taking a few cells through the entire cell assembly process, from start to finish, as part of the commissioning of the machinery," a spokesman said.

Canada regulator seeks information from public on Rogers-Shaw deal

(Reuters) - A Canadian regulator on Tuesday asked for information from the public on telecom company Rogers Communications Inc's planned C$20 billion ($16 billion) purchase of Shaw Communications Inc to check for competition concerns. The deal announced in March to create Canada's second-largest cellular and cable operator has attracted regulatory scrutiny. The Competition Bureau said in August it obtained court orders to advance its review. The regulator on Tuesday asked market participants and Canadians to come forth with information that could assist the regulator's probe on whether the deal will reduce or prevent competition.
