UK competition watchdog clears Uber's Autocab takeover after raising concerns

(Reuters) - Britain's competition watchdog said on Monday it had cleared Uber's takeover of UK tech firm Autocab, after its initial probe found the deal would not affect competition in the country's taxi booking and dispatch software market.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) began its investigation into the deal in January for possible effects on supply of dispatch software - one of Autocab's key services - referral networks, and any potential merger of Autocab's customers.
The CMA found that there was "only limited indirect competition" between the two companies.
"...the companies are not close competitors, the two businesses will continue to face competition from rivals and Autocab's customer taxi companies can switch to credible alternative providers if they wish," said Joel Bamford, senior director of mergers at the CMA.

Canada regulator seeks information from public on Rogers-Shaw deal

(Reuters) - A Canadian regulator on Tuesday asked for information from the public on telecom company Rogers Communications Inc's planned C$20 billion ($16 billion) purchase of Shaw Communications Inc to check for competition concerns. The deal announced in March to create Canada's second-largest cellular and cable operator has attracted regulatory scrutiny. The Competition Bureau said in August it obtained court orders to advance its review. The regulator on Tuesday asked market participants and Canadians to come forth with information that could assist the regulator's probe on whether the deal will reduce or prevent competition.
